Lochaline, The Beauty Of The Scottish Highlands.

Diving StevenHird COMMENTS 22 Aug, 2019

Lochaline Dive trip, August 2019.

Our annual jaunt to dive with Lochaline Charters around the Sound of Mull lived up to every expectation.

Only disappointment was the ban on scallop hunting which normally provides us with a sumptious meal on one of the evenings. Abs made up for it with  four decent size fish all superbly cooked for the evening meal.

Accommodation is in the very well equipped house and we cater for ourselves over the three night stay, all very civilised. Lochaline is a fair treck, the journey after Glasgow is breath taking however and to me, is part of what makes this trip so exceptional in our calendar.

All our dives this trip were on the wrecks, exceptionally beautiful every one of them. The colour and life on the wrecks, and the condition of the wrecks themselves make the journey worthwhile. We dived off Brenden with Malcolm doing a superb job of skippering. Boat has a compressor onboard so air fills were very convenmient

The wrecks covered were, SS Thesis, nice intact wreck sunk in 1889. Depths on this one were 12 to 32 metres. SS Rondo was a real highlight of the weekend. An interesting wreck with the bow at 50+ metres and the stern at just 5m and laying at an angle of 35 degrees. Perfect for every level of diver once we got slack water. The ship sank in 1935. SS Breda is a huge wreck, we spent two dives on this one and could have done many more and still not covered the whole ship, This one went down in 1940. SS Shuna is a relatively easy dive being perfectly upright and quite intact. Tide conditions dictated we finish off on the Pelican, a shallow, upright, but very silty cargo boat, all good fun and provided Adrian with a big crab for tea.

Entertainment was provided by the local hostelry with a unique landlord of the Basil Fawty mold, the beer is good though and they eventually agreed to feed us, food was excellent, so Lochaline Hotel is worth a visit. Thanks to all the divers for being great company.

We are currently booking next year so get your name down if you would like to join us, the trip is limited to twelve, the capacity of the house and boat.
