Dive Against Debris In Aware Week

Environment StevenHird COMMENTS 29 Sep, 2020

AWARE WEEK September 20th -27th 2020

Diveworld`s Dive Against Debris Event - Devils Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Once a year we focus our attention on Marine Debris. Not being particularly coastal in our location we at Diveworld have had to be inventive in our choice of dive sites to mark AWARE week.

A favorite has always been Devils Bridge. Located just below one of our most visited dive training sites, Capernwray, it sits at the start of the beautiful Lake District. The venue is a popular weekend meeting place for bikers throughout the UK with an outstanding burger van offering suitable refreshment.

On arrival it was obvious that there had been some rain in the previous week as there was some current above the bridge. In the wider section it settled so this was chosen as the first entry. Water was running on the surface but nice and settled beneath. Nicely there was no great build up of debris, odd pockets had gathered in crevices which were easy to collect. The Project AWARE mesh bags are a perfect size to gather and carry any debris found.

After collating the collected debris from the first dive onto the DAD Data Card and a warm in the sun we decided to get a bit more adventurous and jump into the current above the bridge. Taking a brisk 30 metre drift was great fun, bit too quick to gather debris, but we were soon in the wider area after the bridge again and continued scanning for debris.

It is refreshing to see that we can return to a site and not see any great changes in debris build up. The numerous litter bins around the beauty spot, and the fact they are emptied regularly, even on a Sunday, obviously make a huge difference, kudo to the local council for being proactive.

Another fun event, with a serious message. We cant use the ocean as a dumping ground!

Thanks to everyone who turned out, especially those who completed the Project AWARE Dive Against Debris Specialty on the day. You guys can now make any dive a Dive Against Debris dive. Debris statistics have been logged with Project AWARE.

One job left is to start planning for next year`s event. Any Ideas? Please drop us an e-mail if you have a dive that would benefit from a clean up event, or you want to know more about making a difference with Project AWARE.
